SMTP Notification Problems

PaperCut is raising a MessagingException or SocketException when an email notification is sent. The email never arrives. What settings should I check?

The error indicates that the remote SMTP server (your mail server) is either not accepting or is rejecting the connection. Some common problems:

  • Check that the name or IP of the mail server is correct.
  • Some SMTP servers require users to authenticate first via POP or another SMTP handshake. Make sure your server accepts plain SMTP connections from your local IP addresses (i.e. from your server).
  • If your SMTP server has a firewall install, make sure it can accept connections.
  • Check the logs on your SMTP server. These logs may give a ‘hint’ to the cause of the rejection.
