Error: Test Page failed to print

“Help! I just tried printing a test page from my Windows computer, and ran into an error message “Test page failed to print”. Why did this happen?”

Check the Event Viewer

We’ve found that often times the reason for this error message will appear in the Windows Print Service Admin logs in the Windows Event Viewer. Follow the steps below to find the error.

Steps

  1. Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + R, then type eventvwr.msc and hit the enter key.
  2. Next, navigate to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Print Service.
  3. Then open the Admin log.
  4. Search for Event ID 372 to see the specific error message for more details.

Known Causes

We’ve heard of this happening after a user is trying to set up PaperCut Mobility Print, but an administrator has configured Group Policy to block IPP Printing. If so, you will see this error message in the event logs:

“Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 1260. This program is blocked by group policy.”

This setting can be found in Group Policy under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Internet Communication Management > Internet Communication settings. Look for Turn off printing over HTTP and set this to disabled.
